Why do atheists use the term "fellow" so much?

as in "my fellow atheists" or "fellow non-believers." everybody says it but I noticed that in many atheist debates atheists say it a lot like its just everyday atheist terminology. does it give atheists a sense of identity to be able to project their selves(atheism) onto others who think like them since they have no true identity outside of other humans/material? just curious.
